Paul’s dog Martha was originally named Knickers, after she peed on Paul’s lap. Soon after Paul got her, he went away for about a month on business and asked the breeder to take care of her because he “was very attached to the puppy” and didn’t think the housekeeper would look after the puppy adequately. Embarrassed by the name (knickers is british slang for underwear), they called her Nicky instead. After Paul returned home he changed the puppy’s name to Martha because Jane Asher hated the name Knickers. Says Paul: “She was a dear pet of mine. I remember John being amazed to see me being so loving to an animal. He said, ‘I’ve never seen you like that before’. You know, he wouldn’t have. It’s only when you’re cuddling around with a dog that you’re in that mode.” Martha died on Paul’s farm in 1981, at the age of 15.
